I would say either way is correct and it depends on the situation we have a conversation that we say "wait a minute" or "hang on a second".

1. We say " hang on a second" / "hang on (please) / please hold/ one moment (please)/ just a second (please)" for…
… connecting someone in a telephone conversation
E.g.
"Hang on a sec. I'll put you through to the office of Mr. Joey." :D

2. We say" wait a minute " in order…
… to interrupt someone or…
… to get their attention or when you have suddenly thought of something important
E.g.
"Wait a minute. I don't agree with that."
"Wait a minute. I've just had an idea."

Does that make sense to you, my dear Joey ? They are all typical phrases thou. :-)

I am just a guest and today i took a chance to visit the website of your English club and i saw your question which is very interesting. In order to speak good English,
- u need to have good "core vocabulary" as well as Grammar.
- But that's not enough, u also need to have knowledge about social life, so u can go into long conversation.
- Sometimes the spoken English is not the same as the written one, therefore it would be better when u know how the people from English spoken countries speak. Ex: Instead of saying: Wait a minute, people in England would say: Hang on a sec.
- Work on your pronunciation because that's the most important fact.
- Last but not least, be confident, don't be shy, scared or stress. Just speak what u can and don't worry about the mistakes, the more mistake u make, the more u learn.
Those are my advices and i hope your speaking will be improved very soon. BE CONFIDENT and good luck

What did I mean by "helpful"?

Cách học tiếng Anh của bạn phụ thuộc vào hoàn cảnh hiện tại của bạn. Hoàn cảnh hiện tại của bạn bao gồm: trình độ, điều kiện học tập và mục đích hiện tại của bạn.

Rõ ràng đối với người có mục đích học tiếng Anh học thuật (để dịch thuật hay viết bài nghiên cứu chẳng hạn), thì việc cố gắng viết tiếng Anh thật chuẩn là một việc nên làm. Nhưng đối với một người có mục đích nâng cao kỹ năng nghe nói (để giao tiếp, hay nhằm nâng cao điểm số của những bài standardized tests) thì việc quá lo lắng xem mình có viết chuẩn hay không lại là 1 trở ngại (đặc biệt đúng với người Việt Nam).

Lý do tôi nói là nó không "helpful" là bởi vì người Việt Nam chúng ta nói chung đều có những nhược điểm là: không dám mạnh dạn nói và câu nệ sách vở! Do đó, đa số chúng ta chỉ tự tin giao tiếp khi nào biết chắc những điều mình nói là "chuẩn". Đây thực sự là một trở ngại: Nếu bạn tốn quá nhiều thời gian vào việc trau chuốt câu chữ, bạn sẽ bỏ qua nhiều cơ hội luyện tập nghe nói thực tế.

Đương nhiên, việc hoàn thiện kỹ năng viết vẫn phải được tiến hành dần dần, nhất là khi khả năng nghe nói của bạn đã tương đối tốt.

Trong mọi việc, chúng ta đều phải xác định "trọng tâm", và "thứ tự ưu tiên". Trọng tâm như thế nào thì chỉ có bản thân mỗi người mới xác định được mà thôi.

Còn về điều kiện học tập. Hồi xưa, tôi không học tiếng Anh qua máy tính đơn giản vì hồi đó CNTT còn rất lạc hậu. Nhưng ít ra, tôi và các bạn cùng lứa có máy cassette player để nghe băng ngoại ngữ và nghe nhạc. Đó là điều kiện tối thiểu và cũng là bình dân so với mặt bằng chung của xã hội thời đó. Còn đối với năm 2009, thì việc bỏ vài nghìn ra dùng máy nối mạng tại bất kỳ một hàng Net/Game nào theo tôi cũng là "mặt bằng chung". Trên máy tính bạn có thể nghe nhạc, xem phim, v.v.

• Tôi ví dụ một lỗi viết của bạn nhé. "At this stage" or "in this stage"??? Nếu muốn nói chung chung về "tại thời điểm này" thì người ta dùng "at". Nhưng nếu muốn nói cụ thể về "giai đoạn phát triển" thì người ta có thể dùng "in". Đấy bạn thấy không, viết cho đúng là một việc rất tinh tế. Nhưng đối với những người còn có nhiều khó khăn trong kỹ năng nghe nói thì đây là một việc "chẻ sợi tóc làm tư" và không nên để ý tới.

And may I ask you a question? What does 'first thing first'(in your post)mean? It's first time I see this term. And "truth be told" means "that long ma noi" in Vietnamese, isn't it?(I encounted it when I read a paper on the internet). Help me, please.

Firstly, if I have no television or walkman (since I'm staying in a hostel), what will you advice me to learn well? I remember, in 17th birthday party of HYEC, you said that the first chairman and members tried hard to learn English despite of many difficulties. Of course, I'm not complaining about my condition. I just want to get your advices and get better at English.

Secondly, in my opinion, we had better practise writing in perfect grammar. You can show all my mistakes if needs be. I think it's a good way to be better,not only in English but also in many fields. Do you think so?

I don't understand what you mean when you said 'it's not helpful in this stage'. I think we'll speak or write much more confident if we're good at grammar. So whenever we learn English, we should improve our grammar, check it carefully as much as you can.

First thing first, your grammar is ok. At this stage, you shouldn't worry too much about writing perfect sentences. (I'm not saying that striving for perfection is a bad idea, just that it's not helpful at this stage.)

Ok, let's move on to your listening. Here are some tips:

• Immersion: Try to immerse yourself in English: watching only original English-speaking movies (with English subtitles if you need some support), listening to English songs, trying to use English in all your communications (e.g. emails, speaking with friends, etc.), joining HYEC (that's obvious ;-).
• Pronunciation: You have to know how to pronounce a word correctly in order to recognize it in real conversations. Whenever you learn a new word, make sure you know how it's pronounced, and then practice saying it out loud.
• Reading out loud: This is an extension of the second tip. Try to read a little each day (e.g. a news article each day). But instead of just reading it for comprehension, read it out loud. Imagine your're a famous news anchor announcing this piece of news on television. Try to imitate his/her voice, even smile at an imaginary camera. :-) The point here is: imitation helps you practice your pronunciation, and your own voice will train your ears to pick up the words when it's spoken in real life.
