Many people have asked me for tips on overcoming the problems they have in learning English. It seems everyone encounters a very common problem: It's very hard to build a solid and long-term vocabulary — vocabulary that can be actively and effectively used in diverse situations. Most of the time, when we try to memorize new words by rote learning, we quickly forget the words a few days later. And even if we can remember the words, we often cannot use them effectively to express our thoughts.
This is because new words must be learnt in their contexts. Without context, most of the meaning of a word is lost, and we don't have any "handle" to hold on to its meaning.
One of the best way to learn new words in their contexts is to read a piece of text. So in this thread, I will share some interesting readings I encounter on the internet. They'll help you build your vocabulary, as well as provide some food for thought.
To test your comprehension of an article, you should try to summarize it with your own words, or try to give some opinion. Sometimes, if the topic is interesting enough, we can use it as the discussion topic on Sunday.
